Opening and Closing Boarded Chests

At some point it is required to have a look at how we open and close a chest. That is, the hinges and locking mechanisms. I pulled most of the chests used in the research side of this series and have put together a not-so-little table detailing the lot. And though we know what the “Basic Continental” style chest might look like, I’ve had hobb trying to find extant examples of German, French, or other Central European examples of this type of chest. The one resource I have come across is a pdf in German which requires some electronical wizardry and translation to pull the data from. As my copious free time has started to find limits, the timetable for that bit of work is getting extended. Also, I’d really like to make some sawdust in the near future. I have some great 4″ thick slabs of oak which will be my new workbench. That project will be journaled here at Baroque Pearls. For the purposes of this table, “Hasp and Hasps” indicates the location or presence of both the hasp and staple mechanisms.
